Supporting Your Partner

Supporting an addicted spouse through drug and alcohol rehab for substance abuse can be challenging, but it can also be incredibly rewarding.

Understanding the drug and alcohol rehab process and educating yourself about alcohol use and drug addiction, as well as treatment for drug or alcohol abuse, is crucial for providing valuable support to your loved one. Open communication and encouraging positive lifestyle changes are essential for successful recovery.

Be Informed about Treatment Providers and Drug or Alcohol Abuse

To start, familiarize yourself with the different stages, duration, treatment centers, and goals of inpatient treatment or intensive outpatient treatment for alcohol dependency or drug addiction. This knowledge allows you to offer informed support at every step of the recovery journey. Knowing what to expect at rehab can help you provide comprehensive support.

Equally important is educating yourself about addiction and alcohol detox. Gaining insight into your loved one’s physical dependence withdrawal symptoms and any psychological struggles or mental health disorders will help you empathize with them more deeply. It also breaks down stigmas surrounding the use of drugs or alcohol, allowing you to approach your role as a supporter with compassion. Many people struggling with addiction have been victims of domestic violence, mental illness, emotional or physical abuse in their childhood, and other social or economic hardships, and helping understand the cycle of substance abuse can help couples struggling with their relationship to understand each other.

Maintaining open communication during their time in a treatment facility is crucial for their recovery. Creating a safe space for them to express thoughts, fears, and progress with substance abuse while actively listening shows tremendous support. In addition to open communication, encouraging positive lifestyle changes significantly supports someone in drug alcohol rehab. This may involve helping them reach out for additional resources for mental health services, find healthy hobbies or activities that replace alcohol use and drug addiction, or assist with practical matters such as employment or stable housing after leaving the treatment center.

Remember that supporting your loved one through this process is an ongoing commitment that requires patience, understanding, and unconditional love from both sides. You can make an incredible difference in their life by taking these steps and continuously showing up for them throughout their substance abuse recovery. It’s just as important to take care of your own needs as well, though. The families of a recovering addict have also been negatively affected by substance abuse and self-care, healthy boundaries, and therapy may be needed.

Building a Strong Support System with Emotional Support

During treatment for drug and alcohol abuse, emotional support plays a crucial role in helping your loved one stay motivated and focused. Be there for them and let them know that you’re a source of comfort and encouragement. Here are some tips on how to provide emotional support:

Active Listening:

When your loved one wants to talk about their experiences, fears, or challenges, take the time to listen actively. Give them your undivided attention, maintain eye contact, and show genuine interest in what they’re saying. Avoid interrupting or offering unsolicited advice unless asked. Active listening can be difficult when substance abuse is affecting your mutual life or relationship, but resisting the urge to pressure your spouse can make a difference in what they feel comfortable sharing.

Express Empathy:

Empathy is essential in showing understanding and compassion towards your loved one’s struggles. Put yourself in their shoes and acknowledge their feelings without judgment or criticism. Let them know that you understand their difficult journey with alcohol abuse or drug addiction and that you’re there for support. Knowing that you want them to succeed can make it easier to commit to long-term treatment.

Offer Encouragement:

Encouragement can go a long way in boosting your loved one’s morale during the challenging moments of rehab. Remind them of the strength, resilience, and progress they’ve made so far. Be their cheerleader by providing positive affirmations and reinforcing their determination to succeed. You can remind them of their goals and how far they’ve come, and you can offer ideas for sticking to their plan for sobriety.

Educating Yourself on Addiction Recovery

Understanding your spouse’s addiction and its effects is crucial when supporting a loved one at a rehab. Educate yourself about addiction recovery to gain insight into your loved one’s struggles and provide more effective support. Research from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) provides additional information about drug and alcohol use and addictive behaviors to help support loved ones during early recovery and throughout their journey. There are a number of ways to learn more about drug or alcohol use and treatment options.

Educate self about addiction treatment

Read books:

Several books help you understand addiction’s nature and impact on individuals and families. Recommended titles include “In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts” by Gabor Maté, “Beautiful Boy” by David Sheff, and “The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous.”

Watch documentaries:

Documentaries provide powerful insights into the world of illicit drugs, prescription painkillers, and the effects of substance use disorder. Consider films like “The Anonymous People,” “Recovery Boys,” or “Pleasure Unwoven.” These documentaries offer personal stories, expert interviews, and valuable information about addiction challenges.

Join support groups:

Online support groups tailored to families affected by addiction are excellent for education and emotional support. Websites like SMART Recovery Family & Friends offer forums to connect with others going through addiction recovery with similar experiences. For in-person meetings, there are options such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) for your addicted spouse.

Attend workshops or seminars:

Look for local workshops or seminars on drug addiction and education for families and friends. These events feature experts who provide valuable insights into understanding addiction better. You can often find more information about these at a  drug or alcohol rehab center.

Seek information from reliable sources:

Choose reputable websites related to substance use disorder, such as the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) or Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). They offer comprehensive information on various aspects of addiction, treatment options, recovery resources, and tips for supporting loved ones.

Participating in Mental Health Services

Family therapy is crucial for the recovery journey of individuals in a rehab program. These sessions allow family members to address how addiction has affected their relationships. By actively participating, you show your commitment to your loved one’s recovery and willingness to work through any underlying issues together. When an individual is receiving professional help for an addiction to alcohol or drugs, they may participate in a number of evidence-based therapies and other support services, including individual counseling sessions, therapy for married couples, and family therapy sessions.

One key benefit of therapy is that it promotes healing within intimate relationships. When an addicted spouse continues drinking or drug use despite negative consequences, it can lead to resentment, anger, and mistrust. Through therapy, families can work to overcome emotional detachment, learn to communicate openly and constructively and develop a mutually positive outlook.

Effective communication is essential for healthy relationships and supporting your loved one’s recovery. It can help with self-esteem in recovering addicts and contribute to a sober life. In therapy, you’ll learn techniques for active listening, expressing yourself honestly yet respectfully, and resolving conflicts peacefully.

family therapy sessions

Furthermore, participating in couples therapy creates a supportive environment that fits their individualized treatment plan for substance use disorders. When your loved ones see their family actively engaged in their healing process, it reinforces their motivation to overcome addiction to drugs or alcohol. Your presence conveys love, empathy, and solidarity – essential for successful rehabilitation.

To make the most out of therapy sessions:

  • Approach meetings with an open mind and willingness to participate fully.
  • Listen attentively without interrupting or passing judgment.
  • Share thoughts and feelings honestly but respectfully.
  • Focus on expressing concerns constructively rather than using blame or shame language.
  • Be receptive to feedback from your loved one and other family members.
  • Collaborate with the therapist on developing effective strategies for supporting your loved one’s treatment plan at a  rehab center.

Assisting with Practical Matters

When your loved one is in an alcohol detox program or drug rehab, they may have temporarily left behind various responsibilities and tasks. Assisting them with practical matters can ease their worries and show your support as they receive substance abuse treatment.

Helping them organize their finances is one way to assist with practical matters. Offer to help create a budget or handle any financial tasks they may need assistance with, such as going through bills or managing payments. You can also help coordinate payment for treatment. This could mean talking to your health insurance provider to determine what benefits private insurance policies offer for inpatient rehab or outpatient rehab treatment options.

Taking care of their pets or managing household chores can also be a great help. Offer to feed and walk their pets or take care of any necessary housekeeping tasks like cleaning the house or mowing the lawn. Additionally, consider offering transportation support for appointments or other commitments related to their recovery process.

Communicate openly with your loved one about what practical matters they would like assistance with while respecting their boundaries and autonomy during this time. By offering concrete help where it’s needed most, you can contribute significantly while they are recovering from alcohol use disorder or other illicit drug use by easing some of the stressors associated with being in rehab or during intensive outpatient or traditional outpatient treatment.

Celebrating Substance Abuse Milestones and Achievements

During the rehabilitation process, celebrating milestones and achievements is crucial for both you and your loved ones participating in addiction treatment programs. These celebrations provide motivation and remind you of the progress made during both the early stages and later stages of recovery. Services at an alcohol detox center can help your spouse understand their needs better and share them with you.

Remember that celebrations don’t have to be extravagant; the sentiment behind them matters most. Your loved ones will appreciate your effort to recognize and celebrate milestones, no matter how small.

By acknowledging and celebrating milestones and achievements during this challenging time, you not only provide emotional support but also help your addicted spouse feel seen, heard, and valued. This positive reinforcement significantly contributes to ongoing progress in an addiction treatment center.

celebrating milestones

Here are some milestones during drug or alcohol addiction rehabilitation for you to celebrate:

Sobriety Anniversaries:

Sobriety anniversaries mark significant milestones in your partner’s addiction journey. Celebrate these anniversaries by acknowledging their commitment to sobriety and expressing pride in how far they have come. You can organize a small gathering with close friends or family members or plan a special outing or activity that aligns with your interests.

Recovery Program Milestones:

Many alcohol rehab programs at alcohol detox centers involve completing specific steps or phases as part of the recovery process, such as alcohol detoxification, participating in behavioral couples therapy, or reaching personal goals. Acknowledge these achievements by recognizing your spouse’s effort, dedication, and progress with their addiction issues.

Personal Achievements:

Apart from program-specific milestones, it is important to celebrate individual achievements accomplished during their treatment program at an addiction treatment center. This could include rebuilding relationships, learning new coping mechanisms, developing healthy habits, and achieving academic or professional goals. Acknowledging how far a person has come can encourage them to resist cravings and urges to relapse. Make sure that your celebrations are non-judgmental, though. That way, if your partner does have a setback, they will feel comfortable asking for help.

When I left PRC, I felt I had an entirely new perspective on life that I never imagined possible.I went in kicking and screaming, completely in a hell of my own making. I know others reading this will understand what I mean…I had been torturing myself for so many years, that even (I) assumed I would never get better…that it wasn’t possible to overcome this.I fought PRC every step of the way…at first. After about a week in the program, I began to notice how much differently I felt about myself, my struggles, and my CHANCES at getting past what brought me to them in the first place.Sure, I was still struggling, and I still do…but they taught me the TRUTH about WHY I struggle, and gave me the TOOLS I needed (and you or your loved one needs) to find a way out and STAY clean. They taught me to WANT IT!Once I gave them the SLIGHTEST CHANCE…PRC unlocked my inner DESIRE to get clean and STAY clean. How they were able to reverse the psychological turmoil I had been living with, I’ll never truly understand…I don’t need to. And you don’t either. You simply need to get better. This is the place for you to achieve that goal. The kindest, most down to earth therapists…(Hi, V!) cutting edge, reality based platforms…and a true sense of community and understanding are what separate Paramount from the all the others. To whomever is reading this…JUST TRY THEM AND SEE!After all the other programs, I never thought it could work either…but Paramount is beyond different. They truly care. And you will too.Jake from RehobothAJ LetoAJ Leto ★★★★★ I am a person in recovery and a life coach. I am grateful to share the firsthand experience with the human progress and healing results generated by the Paramount Team. I directly support a graduate and am consistently in the company of participants actively in the program.Paramount is surrounding its participants with a whole support system for recovery to be established authentically.I recently got to join some participants and employees at lunch. They were genuinely enjoying life; I heard them attribute their joy and contentment to their experiences “at the house” or tie it to the support from clinicians and staff. The Paramount model is brilliant. It’s real life, and the supports are community-based. The participants aren’t removed from the community. They are thriving because they are in the community, and they genuinely get that the staff cares about them.Wade MailletWade Maillet ★★★★★ A very dedicated staff who is fully committed to all the individuals who come through Paramount. I my self have been working with Matty for a couple of years now. He helped be before the pandemic in April of 2020 with detox and a great rehab facility afterwards, for where I stayed at for about 15 months. Through out that whole time we keep in touch and he would often check in on me even after I left the program. Recently i had a set back and he was right there for me helped me again and got me in to a safe a great place. He’s an A1 guy and always had my back and held me down. With out him I’m not sure where or what would if be doing at this time. Currently im in the sober house and doing IOP 3x a week, doing very well these last couple of months me and Matt stay connected. The clinical groups are great the sober house is nice and I honestly have no complaints at all. The people that work there are very cool and helpful and very informative. I’ve been to a couple foul and not good places before in the past but this facility is no where even close to that. I’m in a much better place now then I have been in a long time. Very thankful and grateful to have a place like this available to people who go through the same struggle that I do. I would definitely recommend this facility for sure. Thanks again.TB!js_loader
